Fearless: Jet Li’s final film
I’m going to miss Jet Li. I recently watched Fearless, which is supposedly his last martial arts film. At forty-two years, I can hardly blame him for having the common sense to back out while he’s at the top. Not to say that he isn’t going to continue making movies, but who wants to see Jet Li act?
I’ve been a fan of martial arts films since I was a kid and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that a lot of my interest and activity in Karate and Aikido stemmed from watching these films and being inspired (don’t get me started on Steven Seagal. Just because he’s tubby and likes country-western doesn’t mean he can’t rip you in half). Arguably, the most impressive and consistent actor to me has always been Jet Li. His speed and physical grace and prowess is amazing. His life is inspiring and his dedication truly awesome. In interviews, I’ve always been struck by his humility, candidness and earnest good nature. If ever there was a role model—screw that flash-in-the-pan NBA player, Jet Li blows them all out of the water.
While my favorite Jet Li films will always be “Fist of Legend” and “Tai-Chi Master” (also known as “Twin Dragons”), “Fearless”, as a curtain call is nothing to ashamed about. Watching it reminded me why Jet Li command and deserves respect, admiration and ultimately, emulation. I’m sorry to see him go.
