I watch television
I was just thinking about what current television shows that I consider view-worthy. I’ve never been a big TV person, until I got a TiVo. A DVR completely changes the television experience, making it actually worthwhile. Anyway, since I’m a closet list junkie, here’s what I watch now (or impatiently wait the return of) as far as television is concerned:
- Lost—Season three was the weakest so far. Still, the very last few episodes picked up the pace from what was an at times ridiculously idiotic year, bringing some of the elements from the first two seasons that made the show good in the first place. Since the recent announcement of an end-date of two more seasons, I think Lost really has a chance of gaining back all the ground it has “lost” this season. A set date for the end will hopefully restore a focus to the plot. I’m hopeful. It’s a good show.
- Battlestar Galactica—a.k.a. “Best Fucking Show Ever!”. I can’t adequately describe my love for BSG. If you’re a fan, you likely can sympathize. The setting, the characters, the Cylons, the fucking drama! So good. I can’t wait for the fourth season, as well as the spin-off, Caprica. If you’ve never watched this show, grab the first few seasons on DVD and catch up, it’s one of the best SciFi dramas ever made.
- The Sopranos—Who doesn’t watch this show? While some seasons have been stronger than others, it’s one of the best dramas ever aired on television. I’ll be sad to see it go.
- Dexter—A homicide unit’s blood spatter expert who moonlights as serial killer, preying on other murderers… of course this show is awesome. I really like Michael C. Hall, having first seen him in “Six Feet Under“. It’s got a lot of blood, gallows humor and some genuine creep factor. I dig it.
- Law & Order: SVU—Where could I begin? How can I adequately describe my love, admiration and devotion to SVU? The drama! The characters! Eliot Stabler; he burns with rage! Olivia Benson; she feels every victims pain! Odafin Tutuola; a hardcore, mouthy, motherfucker with a heart buried beneath a solid exterior that’s ice fuckin’ cold! John Munch…perhaps the greatest character ever created. Munch is the fucking man. With syndication and the fact that somewhere, nearly every hour, there’s an SVU on, my TiVo rarely have any less than 6-8 episodes on it drive at any given time. I’m usually able to tell if I’ve seen an episode before within the first five seconds of the show. There is never an evening where I’m not down for a couple episodes. I’m a tried and true SVU geek. Law & Fucking Order!
- Project Runway—I know next to nothing about fashion, but I’ll critique like I do. I don’t have much respect for reality television. It’s fucked up. Most of the time, it’s orchestrated and it’s always so heavily edited and rearranged that no scene is really ever above suspicion of having been cobbled together in an editing room. Still, Project Runway is good TV, mainly because these designers work hard and produce things (some amazing and others, total crap) that as a viewer, I can appreciate or criticize. Every runway session, the TiVo gets paused and a dialog about what’s being shown starts. This is what makes the show for me.
- Top Chef—Same story as above. Good reality TV because of the actual challenge and talent. Plus, everyone eats food. Out of a genre that typifies some of the most disgusting social elements of the human race. Top Chef is pretty strong reality television.
- The Daily Show—The only television news show worth watching (other than the below mentioned Colbert Report). Over the past 5 years, I’ve come to view just about every TV news show as fear-mongering, agenda-pushing bullshit that lowers my I.Q. every time I make the mistake of watching them. Local news stations are particularly offensive. To me, TV news is dead. It’s outdated, disingenuous and a pathetic sell-out of an industry. At least with the Daily Show, I laugh.
- The Colbert Report—Stephen Colbert is an absolute genius. His half hour show is perhaps one of the greatest comedic satires ever to run on television. The man wields an insane amount of cultural power, plus he has huge, swinging, balls of brass. Stephen Colbert is the fucking man.
