Entering Texas With The Butthole Surfers

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

I often forget the fact that youtube (or the internet in general) has nearly everything that was ever on film or video during my childhood and adolescent years (at the very least a clip of it), archived a click away.

Today I rediscovered, “Entering Texas”, a short film by the Butthole Surfers that occupied my life when I was about 15 or 16. Back in those days, VHS was king, so it was up to the cool kids who ordered the films or at least made a decent copy. I must have watched this shit like 200 or so times, mostly high and hallucinating:

Everybody Loves a Chubby Dude

TurbonegroLast night, I saw Turbonegro, one of my all-time favorite bands, perform at the Nokia Theater here in New York. I’ve never seen them live before and while I’m jaded in their favor due to being a fan, I really was pretty unprepared for exactly how truly fucking awesome they are in person. Norwegian fucking Death Punk! Hank From Hell was totally hilarious, shaking his blubber all over the place and Happy Tom is the fucking man. Easily one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Denim, lipstick, mascara and some fucking rouge.

I took almost two hundred photos that night and have uploaded them to a flickr set. Feel free to view them at your leisure.

What I’m hearing now has big, hairy balls

Since I’m kind of all over the map on what I like to listen to, for this post I’m going to stick specifically to the Doom Metal genre of albums that I’ve picked up from eMusic that I find praiseworthy.

[warhorse.jpg]There’s only one full album that Warhorse ever put out and it’s balls-out awesome Doom. As Heaven Turns to Ash has some of the heaviest, slowest and lowest bass lines I’ve heard. The style leans on the psychedelic side with the main tracks interspersed with light and at times folk-like short instrumentals. It sounds weird as I try to describe it, but it works. Heavily inspired by Black Sabbath and L.S.D., Warhorse ranks right up there with Electric Wizard as one of my favorite Doom bands. If you’re not into Doom Metal, this album will change that. This is really good shit.
